PG 74-82

Today in class we...

Turned in PG56-73

Created our Parent Graph Tool Kit Books (If you were absent I will give you instructions on Wednesday)

Entered information about the parent graphs for lines, parabolas, cubics, exponentials, and hyperbolas.

Completed problems 76, 78-82 due on Wednesday.

PG 56-73

Today in class we...

Turned in PG 22-41, and 42-53

Completed PG 56-60 to learn how to shift other parent graphs other than parabolas, we used a resource page to complete 56 to save time. Resource page can be found at http://cpm.org/pdfs/stuRes/Math3/unit_04/PG-56_Resource_Page.pdf or by using the links at the right.

Corrected dspas with scores lower than 80%

Worked on PG61-73 for homework due Monday November 29

PG32,33, 42-53

Today in class we...

Answered questions and corrected PG 22-41...extended due date until Tuesday November 23

Discussed Modeling Parabolas by completing PG32, and 33 together

Steps:
1) Determine the location of the x- and y- axes
2) Determine the vertex of the parabola (x, y) h=x-coordinate of vertex, k=y-coordinate of vertex
3) Plug h and k into graphing form of the equation, y=a(x-h)^2+k
4) Choose a point other than the vertex to plug into the equation (x-intercepts work well here) so that the only variable left is "a"
5) Solve for "a"
6) Plug "a", "h", and "k" into the graphing form of the equation and sketch a graph.
Done!

Discussed Completing the Square using algebra tiles and completing PG46 and 47 together, then doing 48 and 49 in groups.

Steps:
1) Arrange x^2 and x tiles into a square
2) Fill in with unit tiles
3) Write the name of the square and how many unit tiles you are short/long

or:
1) Take coefficient of x
2) Divide by 2... this becomes (-h) in the graphing form of the equation...
3) Take the value in step 2 and square it
4) Subtract the value from step 3 from the number of units in the standard form or the equation...this becomes k in the graphing form of the equation.

Homework: PG42-44, 53 due on Tuesday.

PG21-41

Today in class we...
Answered questions from Mileposts 1, 5, 6, 7 odds
Completed PG21 as a warm up activity to introduce "Graphing Form" and "Standard Form" of parabolas.

Graphing form: y=a(x-h)^2+k where a=stretch factor/orientation, h=horizontal shift, k=vertical shift.

Standard form: y=ax^2+bx+c *note: a is the same number in both graphing and standard form

After completing PG23, we summarized the process needed to change an equation from standard form to graphing form by averaging the x-intercepts.

Process:
1) find the x-intercepts by substituting y=0
2) average the x-intercepts to find the x-coordinate of the vertex
3) substitute the x-coordinate of the vertex into the equation to find the y-coordinate of the vertex
4) sketch a graph, identify a, h, and k
5) substitute a, h, and k into the graphing form of the parabola

Use this process to answer question #24 and 25.

While working on the assignment, we looked at the FX DSPA. Anyone scoring less than 80% will need to make corrections to this test on Friday.
DSPA STATS: High 100, Low 59. Mean 85.5, Median 88, Mode 99. 13 people scored lower than 80%

Homework: PG26-31, 34-41 Due Friday.

FXDSPA/Mileposts 1, 5, 6, 7 Odds

Today in class we...
answered questions from PG1-20...biggest question was on 16b and c. Hints: Express both bases as powers of the same number ( 4 is 2^2 and 8 is 2^3), then simplify exponents, then set exponents equal to each other and solve for the variable.

turned in 2nd chance binders
turned in PG1-20

Took the FX DSPA...will be graded by Wednesday, if you were absent...make up by 11/24

Completed milepost problems from the back of the book (Page 495) We did mileposts 1, 5, 6, 7 and only completed the odd problems. This assignment is due Wednesday.

:) Thanks!
